How to Screen Your Paint for Lead

Paint Samples

When taking paint samples, look for older paint that is chipping or cracking. Do not disturb paint that is in good condition.

3 samples of inside paint 

Location: Inside the house

  1. Collect different types of paint with each of the 3 cards.
  2. Look for chipping, peeling, or cracking paint from the oldest part of your home.  Look at window, door, and baseboard trim.  
  3. Peel the backing from the tape on the card
  4. Press sticky side to pick up paint from wall. If you can't pick up paint chips or powder, try another location.
  5. Slide card back into the bag and place the sample in its pouch in the lead screening kit
  6. Record the location of each sample on the form

3 samples of exterior paint

Location: Outside the house or garage

  1. Collect different types of paint with each of the 3 cards.
  2. Look for chipping, peeling, or cracking paint on window and door trim and exterior wall paint of your house or garage.  
  3. Peel the backing from the tape on the card
  4. Press sticky side to pick up paint from wall. If you can't pick up paint chips or powder, try another location.
  5. Slide card back into the bag and place the sample in its pouch in the lead screening kit
  6. Record the location of each sample on the form
