Lead and Citizen Science: Collecting Soil Samples to Understand Lead Distribution in SJC
In order to gain more information on lead levels in soil throughout Saint Joseph County, ND LIT has paired with two local homeschooled students to gather samples in a variety of settings. These samples can be used to help paint a picture of the lead levels in public areas throughout the county. Each student collected over 100 samples that are being used to guide our next sampling push.
Citizen science allows for members of the community to collect mass amounts of information to help researchers draw conclusions that can benefit the public. There are many forms of citizen science, and we hope to expand this approach so that all citizens can help to gather soil samples to be analyzed in our lab.
